Beyond Pay-For-Performance:
Leveraging Intrinsic Motivation for Exceptional Performance
What does current research suggest when it comes to motivating employees from within?
How can life science companies cultivate an environment that fosters creativity and innovation?
What role can HR/OD play when it comes to inspiring, engaging and motivating employees?
Rewards and recognition have traditionally been based on what would extrinsically motivate employees to do their job, primarily in the form of bonuses, incentive plans and other external rewards. For positions that require creativity and innovate ideas, particularly in an industry like the life sciences, this approach may actually diminish performance and foster short-term thinking.
Inspired in part by recent literature on intrinsic motivation - "Intrinsic Motivation at Work — What Really Drives Employee Engagement," by Kenneth W. Thomas, Ph.D. and Daniel Pink’s book “Drive,”, this BOLD workshop provides:
An overview of the current research on intrinsic motivation, specifically in the areas of meaningfulness, choice, competence and progress
Examples of how HR/OD leaders have fostered environments that encourage people bring their best to work
Intrinsic motivation metrics such as increased employee productivity and talent attraction
Sets the stage for dynamic conversations with participants to share their experience and ideas and learn how others are encouraging ‘the best of’ in their companies.
By understanding the natural rewards that cultivate creativity, innovation and engagement, we can integrate practices that move us beyond the average and into the exceptional.
Keynote speaker: Ken Thomas will introduce the topic of intrinsic motivation. Ken has an international reputation as a researcher and developer of training materials and is most well known for developing, with Ralph Kilmann, the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI).
Special Guest Speakers: These Life Science leaders will share their experience implementing programs and practices that incorporate the latest intrinsic motivation research:
Heather McGaughey, VP/HR Jazz Pharmaceuticals
Ryan Watt’s, Associate Director, Neuroscience, Genentech
Steve Kowalski, Principal, Leadership Development, Learning, Organizational Development and Diversity, Genentech
